Paul Everingham

Everingham Pavilion (Blatherskite Park) – The Hon. Paul Everingham AO – Chief Minister of the NT, Chairman of the Blatherskite Park Trustees and supporter of the Central Australian Show society. Paul Everingham came to Alice Springs from Brisbane in 1966 as a practicing solicitor.

The following year he established his own legal firm known as Paul Everingham & Co. Paul then became involved in many organisations. He was chairman of the Blatherskite Park Trustees; the park was then being developed for the Alice Springs Pony Club. Later the park’s uses increased to include the show ground for the Central Australian Show Society (CASS).

In 1974 he was elected to the first Legislative Assembly, previously the Legislative Council, and became the Majority Leader in August 1977. The Hon. Paul Everingham became the first Chief Minister of the NT; he held office from 1977-84 and heralded in Self Government for the NT. Paul resigned from the leadership in 1984 and became the Territory’s representative in Federal Parliament. He retired from this position in 1987 to pursue his career as a solicitor in Brisbane and later became President of the Queensland Liberal Party.

Maintaining a keen interest in the CASS, Paul supported its move from Traeger Park to Blatherskite Park. The Everingham Pavilion houses not for profit, community interest groups and clubs. In June 1989 Paul was awarded the Order of Australia for services to the NT.
